Fan Spotlight: Nawtyit
The fan that’s cooking all of CSD3’s menu … except probably the bluefin tuna.
Hello chefs! I’m Ryan, creative writer and social media manager for Vertigo Gaming Inc.
Welcome to 2022, the year in which Pie Right will be established in Texas by an AI named PAL. What a time to be alive!
We’ve got some very, very exciting things planned for 2022 that I’m eager to share through the newsletters, so stay tuned!
Who’s Nawtyit and Why Are We Talking About Him?
Nawtyit (pronounced “not yet”) is a Cook, Serve, Delicious! fan that caught our attention because he’s on a quest to cook seemingly every dish in CSD3. So far, he’s prepared over 70 dishes from the game, all of which he’s shared photos of on his Twitter and Instagram accounts.
We love to celebrate our fans and we rarely get to talk about actual cooking, so we reached out to learn about and share what inspired Nawtyit to cook so many dishes from the game, what his goals are, and what he’s learned from the process!
Where Did The Idea Come From?
Aside from watching cooking shows as a kid and making relatively simple stuff like chilli from time to time, Nawtyit has no cooking background to speak of. So what lead to the decision to cook through so many dishes from CSD3?
Like many people, Nawtyit started working from home in 2020 due to the COVID-19 pandemic. That year, he also picked up a copy of CSD3, which boasts 231 foods (and even more recipes) in its catalog. As the year wore on, Nawtyit grew tired of eating takeout food and the same few homemade recipes over and over. “I figured I have this game that has a ton of different dishes in it, why don’t I just start cooking them?” he said.
What's His Process?
Nawtyit started by preparing dishes he already knew in real life or enjoyed using in CSD3. He also used the in-game food difficulty as a guide and started by preparing all the dishes with a “zero” difficulty level. After getting through those, he started grouping dishes together by common ingredients. In some cases, he’s had to postpone making a dish because he didn’t have a tool required to make it yet. So far he has invested in a rolling pin, a stand mixer, and a food processor, though he’s still looking for a quality chef’s knife.
To teach himself how to make a dish, he searches for recipes that have a lot of positive reviews and watches cooking videos to better understand the process. Sometimes he has to tweak a recipe or substitute ingredients if he can’t find exactly what it calls for. In extreme cases, he’s had to postpone making a dish because he simply doesn’t know how to get an ingredient. “Laulau requires taro leaves,” Nawtyit explained. “I have no idea where I’d even look for those around here, so I guess I’ll have to order those.”
What Has Been Challenging?
While Nawtyit has mostly been able to figure everything out, one particular barrier has made it difficult to prepare several recipes. “I have no ability to boil milk,” he said. “So I can’t do anything that calls for that. The blancmange I made was a total lie. It was my third attempt and I ended up just putting it in the freezer to make it look like a blancmange. I tried to eat it but couldn’t do it. I’m sure blancmange is delicious, but I can’t make it.”
Nawtyit also noted that, while he’s not afraid to attempt any of the foods in CSD3, he doesn’t foresee himself preparing a bluefin tuna. “Firstly, I don’t know where I would buy one,” he said. “Also I think they’re about twice my size and very expensive.”
What Dishes Does He Recommend?
For anyone interested in cooking for themselves, Nawtyit said it’s easier and more fun than you might think—in fact, he considers cooking to be his new hobby! He explained that many different dishes from around the world start with the same basic ingredients, making it relatively easy to make a lot of different dishes right out the gate. “Start with diced onion, garlic, some kind of protein, and whatever the local spices are,” he explained. “You can put that over rice, or inside of bread or a pastry, and you’ve got about twenty different dishes right there.”
Nawtyit also explained that dishes like beef wellington and bananas foster are actually very easy and delicious to make, despite how intimidating they may seem. As for his favorite dishes so far—he’s revisited both mapo tofu and egg foo young several times since his initial attempts and now considers them among his favorite meals.
Thanks for reading, and I can’t wait to share what we’ve been working on later this year!
